Course Catalog Information and FAQ's

Dear Students: 

The counseling staff at Choctaw High School hopes that you will find this Course Catalog helpful and useful.  Enrolling and planning for you future is extremely important, whether you are planning for one yea of additional training, an Associate's Degree, a Bachelor's Degree or more.  Please take your time and work with your parents as you select courses.  The CHS schedule is created new every year based on the courses selected by the students. Select courses that will help you achieve your goals. 

Be sure to utilize the CHS Pre-Enrollment Review created by your counselor and read the Frequently Asked Questions below.  The Graduation Check shows how many units you need for graduation.  Meeting the requirements for graduation is your responsibility!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Should I take a world language in high school?
    YES - College Preparatory Curriculum requires two units of the same world language or two units of computer technology.  We highly recommend two years of a world language. 
  2. Do I need to take a computer class in high school?
    YES - All students should complete at least one computer course before graduating from high school.  Computer Applications I take at the 8th grade level counts for this requirement. 
  3. Do my math units have to include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II?
    YES - Colleges still require Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.  We highly recommend Algebra III and higher math for student pursuing a "college prep" degree.  Choctaw High School students must have four units of math to graduate.
  4. When will I take the ACT Test?
    Sophomores will take the Pre-ACT test at school. Juniors will take a free state required ACT test at school one time 
  5. If I didn't do well in a math class and received a "D", can I still repeat the same class for credit?
    YES - A math class may be repeated, and you can receive elective credit for retaking it.  In fact, it is recommended to better prepare you for success in the next math class.  However, both grades will appear on the transcript.
  6. Can I take two English classes during the same year?
    NO - Students must take the grade level English for the appropriate grade.  Occasionally a student may take two English classes in order to make up credits.
  7. Can I work ahead and graduate early?
    NO - Students are not allowed to work ahead to graduate early.  Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to consider concurrent enrollment at Rose State College after they have met the high school requirements. 
  8. Weighted G.P.A.
    All Advanced Placement (AP) courses will have a weighted G.P.A. scale.  
    Final grades will be on a 5.0 scale.
  9. What is "Concurrent Enrollment"?
    Concurrent enrollment gives students an opportunity to earn college credits while in high school.  Students should take ath ACT test and score a 19 to be considered for enrollment.  See your counselor for more information. 
  10. Oklahoma's Promise
    Oklahoma residents in the 8th, 9th, or 10th grade whose parents earn $55,000 or less per year may apply for free college tuition.  Get more information, or appl online at www.okpromise.org.  Call 1.800.858.1840 for questions.
